A Glimpse Back In Time
Written by: Lynn Wroe
Have you ever wondered what it was like to live back in the 1900’s or even the 1940’s?
How did your family live, what hardships did they have to endure. What food did they eat?
How was their family impacted by war, or even the wall street crash of 1929?
In Australia we have a TV show’s with two seasons one is called Back In Time For Dinner and the other is Further Back In Time For Dinner. The idea of the show is an Australian family goes on a time-travelling adventure to discover how the food we eat has transformed the way we live, the fabric of the nation and defined family roles over the past 60 years.
In the first season Back in Time for Dinner the Ferrone family have their family home, their clothing, their hobbies, their food etc transformed into the different eras from the 1950’s to The Future to see how food, society, life and attitudes have changed.
In the second season – Further Back in Time for Dinner – we join the Ferrone family again, this time they “travel back in time” to the 1900’s through to the 1940’s. This series is not filmed in their home, they have relocated the family to a farm, so they can assimilate the living conditions of the eras they visit.

I arrived in Australia in 1968 as a 4 year old, having moved from Wales with my parents, so the first season 1950’s – The Future, I could relate to most of the episodes as I have lived in some of the era’s. The Second series is where I learned what life would have been like for my step-great grandparents and their families and friends. It really opened my eyes to how different events can impact the family. It made me think about my life and how blessed I have been.
